    MacWorld Expo 2011 has opened (re-opened) free registration for Expo only. You must register before July 26. This pass includes exhibit hall and likely some of the featured speakers.

    Apple revenue is just behind Microsoft on sales revenue. Apple could possibly past Microsoft in sales revenue for the whole fiscal year. Apple capitalization is already ahead of Microsoft.

    The Appleinsider has published a op-ed by a business analyst. The article will put you to sleep, but the bottom line is an expectation of 70% growth in 2010.

    The IOS for the iPhone is now at version 4.1. This “improves” the signal bar representation, and adds some security patches.

    At Gizmodo, Justin Chen has gotten his computers back. The search warrant has been withdrawn, with an agreement for voluntary disclosure.

    YouTube has the iPhone 4 Antenna Song. Worth a listen.

    The best technical discussion may be on ANANDTECH.COM . It has just the facts. Fair, balanced, very geeky.

    A zooming feature is on the iPhone, that uses the triple click on the home button. This helps the visually impaired use the iPhone, Of course, the completely blind are using it in audio mode, with voice over. The features are enabled by the accessibilty settings.

    Rumors: a hardware fix for the antenna problem?

    Rumor: next version of IOS will have a digital fingerprint to catch jailbroken phones.

    Rumor: next revision of iMac and the tower will be in time for back to school. USB 3, Firewire 1600/3200

    Rumor: small form factor iPad, in five inch or six inch.

    Rumor: Mac Book Air will be smaller, and cheaper.

    Rumor: OLED displays may be coming to the iPads, at least in the smaller screen versions (as rumored).

    Musing on the iPad and iPhone 4

    [a freewheeling presentation on all things related to the handhelds]

    1. An iPad is not a total substitute for a Mac.
    -- iPad is inteneded to work in conjunction with a computer.
    -- back up of the iPad is maintained on your laptop/desktop/tower
    -- the iPad is basically an accessory for a Mac.
    -- You can not easily print from an iPad at this time.
    -- printer drivers are large and difficult to maintain
    -- text editing is far inferior
    -- changing and selecting fonts, layouts, etc.
    -- file saving and sharing is limited
    -- more creative apps are needed
    -- that is, apps that are used to create stuff
    -- right now, the iPad is an “output” device.

    2. How an iPad could be a MacBook
    -- Free iPad from tethering to a Mac
    -- open up file sharing and drive access (mount as external drive).
    -- allow for non-App Store apps
    -- expand USB options for camera connection kit.
    -- expand Bluetooth options
    -- solve the touch-screen limitation
    -- have a ‘real’ file system
    3. The best of iPhone 4
    -- the camera lives up to the hype... especially video
    -- REtina Display needs to be seem to be believed
    -- iOS 4 multi-tasking really works well, with some hesitations.
    4. The iPhone 4 Problems
    -- the antenna problem (but this is way overblown)
    -- the compass problem - gives an error in interiors
    -- the bumper problem - the dock opening will not accept older dock plugs.
    -- internet tethering - biggest rip off foisted by AT&T on users
    -- $30 unlimited plan will not allow tethering at all
    -- you must give it up
    -- on the other plans, an additional charge of $20/month is applied
    -- it seems AT&T is actively discouraging tethering
    5. Why Jailbreak
    -- you can get access to software that is not in the Apple App Store
    -- use screen mirroring, to have a live display of the iPhone screen on your Mac screen
    -- use an open file system on the iPhone
    -- turn your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot, sharing your 3G connection
    -- share you game data between multi platforms
    ** The politics of jailbreaking
    Apple does not show “benign neglect” toward jailbreaking
    -- they try to actively prevent it, and wipe out
    jailbreaks with each new system revision.

    It also is a bit-torrent client.

    Q&A

    1. Coast to Coast AM Podcast. I manually rename the episodes. Can this done automatically? I tried Automator. Can I automatically transfer from “description” to “title”?
    Answer: this should be possible with an Applescript. The dougscripts.com web site has lots of pre-made scripts.

    2. Can I save an MP3 attachment in an email message on my iPhone into my iTunes, directly?
    Answer: we do not know.

    3. Is there a device or screen film that will improve visibility of the iPhone screen in sunlight?
    Answer: not that we know of off hand.

    4. Twitter seems to always be unavailable, due to “too many people using twitter”.
    Answer: Twitter is growing 20% per month, and their server farm is not keeping up.

    5. I use Documents to Go on my iPhone. I would like something that is a simple reader,
    so that the popup keyboard is not always popping up when I try to scroll the screen.
    Answer: Calibre can make e-books, which you can then load via iTunes. Then just use eBook to read this.
