Apple manager indicted on a kickback scheme - an Apple Asia parts dealer. He was giving information to vendors so that the vendor could gain a contract.

The Apple online discussion forum may have been hacked this weekend. No details yet.

Surveys out: most Verizon customers would like to buy an iPhone, provided they can stay on Verizon. Daring Fireball claims that Verizon will offer the iPhone on January 11th, 2010.

Is the Droid II having antenna problems? Rumor is it does, more so than the iPhone, but no one is talking about it (or maybe cares?).

The next Mac OS X ten build is seeded, so rumored.

A new ad campaign by Microsoft tries but fails to compare Windows to Mac.

Update released for Adobe Flash 10.1.x -- be sure to get it, for security reasons.

We hear that the Find My iPhone feature has defeated a couple of thefts, resulting in recovery of the iPhone and arrest of the thief.

Survey on iPhone vs. Android shows iPhone users get more sex. From Match.com.

Members launched into a lengthy aside discussion about getting ‘gadget track” on the iPhone, so they could have a “Find My iPhone” without subscribing to MobileMe. They would gladly pay as much, to avoid MobileMe.

Apple Seminars are touring --

Microsoft ads claim that “Mac takes time to learn” and “Macs may not like your PC stuff” and “Windows machines come in all kinds of colors.”

IOS4 software update is out - be sure to upgrade, to prevent the PDF exploit,

New models of iMac and Mac Pro (the tower) are out, with many more cores. Faster. Prettier. Woodbridge 4 core chips. For the 12 core Mac Pro tower, 150 GFlops. Possible 8 TB internal bay storage.

A member points out that USB 3 is not practical unless you actually have a device that requires it.

All models offer option of a solid state drive. You can put four in the Mac Pro, and get the Mac to boot in just ten seconds. (so claimed ...)

Apple now offers a battery charger, for NiHM AA. Cool.

Verizon and Google has offered a net neutrality proposal to the FCC. The FCC does not like the proposal. The grassroots are divided on the issue. Should for example, over the 3G data wireless network, a major web site be allowed to pay for more favorable access rates?

Q and A

1. Considering upgrading my Intel core duo mac mini from 512MB to 2 GB, and upgrade the hard drive. Who is a good vendor for this?
-- You can DIY the memory upgrade.
-- For the drive, you will get better value by attaching a big external drive.
-- A good place for instructions is IfixIt.com
-- Memory Ten can handle the memory upgrade. memoryx.com
-- Definitely buy the Snow Leopard upgrade for your machine.
2. Replace HD on a Santa Rosa model of MacBook Pro? (early 2008)
-- This is a difficult procedure, involving about 14 double-zero phillips screws.
-- but once open, the drive is actually easy to get to.
3. Printing from TextEdit on an HP 7400 printer creates very tiny type.
-- Many a formatting problem in the document?
-- could the document be transmitted as plain text, using the default font of the printer?
4. I have Magic Track Pad, works great on Mac, but not on XP via boot camp. I downloaded the drivers,
but Windows says software is missing. What is missing?
-- We really do not know. Check Apple support, and the discussion forums.
5. Some Quicktime videos that used to play fine, are now showing black video.
-- Perhaps the codec of the particular video is no longer supported.
-- Try playing it in VLC.
-- The Safari menu item to “show installed plug-ins” will list you the video codecs that you currently have.
6. I have a G4 Ti that will not start - no battery charge light.
-- take the battery out, see what happens. The battery might be shorted.
-- may have to replace the back-up battery.
-- may have to reset the power manager unit.
