Hello svmug members & friends!
NOTE this month has a new meeting room & building!
The next meeting (and annual Holiday Potluck) of the Silicon Valley Macintosh User Group (svmug) is on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 7:00PM. As always, meetings are open to the public and free to attend. We are meeting in a NEW BUILDING AND NEW ROOM for December: Benghazi Tech Talk Room, Building 43. See below for details on how to get to the room and info on the Holiday Potluck.
SPEAKER & TOPIC: Joe Kissell - Take Control of Mavericks
OS X 10.9 Mavericks is here, and with it come some welcome improvements as well as potentially frustrating problems. Joe Kissell joins us, remotely via iChat link, to lay out the whole story so you can take control of Mavericks. He explains what you need to know before upgrading (if you haven't already), describes the 10 best new features in Mavericks, and tells you about issues with Mail, Messages, iOS syncing, and more.
OPEN SOURCE TOPIC: Wikimedia Commons (WikiCommons) - presented by Dan Foy
From their site:

Like Wikipedia, it is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimedia Commons is one of the world's largest collections of freely usable media. Anyone can contribute!
** NEW MEETING ROOM & BUILDING LOCATION **
We will be meeting at Google, in the Benghazi Tech Talk Room, which is just down the street from where we usually meet. Please allow for some extra time to find the room. If you are lost, please call 408-877-6377 and we will try to get you to the right place.

MAP and Building picture:
If you log into the svmug yahoo group, click on the Photos link to see photos of the svmug sign which should be posted somewhere near the street or building entrance. If you are not yet a member of the svmug yahoo group, you can easily join from this link by clicking the "About" link and then click "Join Group".
-- From Highway 101, take the Amphitheater Parkway exit, which is also Rengstorff Avenue; Head North.
-- Turn right (East) onto Charleston Rd.
-- Turn left (North) or make a U-Turn as needed to get to the Google complex with Building 43. Look at the map to verify the driveway's location since it is hard to see in the dark.
-- Look for the meeting room shown on the map.
NOTE: If you are coming from the other direction on Charleston (coming from the East and driving West), this building is BEFORE you cross the creek's bridge and hence before you get to our usual buildings. Turn RIGHT at the driveway. Look at the map to verify the driveway's location since it is hard to see in the dark.
** HOLIDAY POTLUCK **
It's that time again! We will have our annual holiday potluck with foods provided by our members. Please bring a dish to share. Something homemade and large enough for 6-8 people is ideal. Bring the serving utensils you need for whatever potluck dish you provide.
We will have power strips with us in case you need to keep your items warm by plugging them in via your own crock-pot or warming tray. There is no microwave oven in the area so please bring your own warming device if needed.
Try to keep the sweets to a minimum. We'll all get plenty of that in the next 2 weeks!
We'll supply the power strips, plates, cups, napkins, plastic forks, spoons, and knives. You supply the food and the serving implements.
NOTE: There is an email trail via the yahoo group for svmug, about who is bringing what to the potluck. If you know what you are bringing, please chime in.

SVMUG (Silicon Valley Macintosh User Group)
SVMUG meetings occur on the 3rd Monday of each month. Meetings are free and open to the public. Audience members may arrive or depart at their convenience, so feel free to arrive late, or leave early if you wish.
SVMUG started as the South Bay branch of the Berkeley Mac User Group (BMUG), and lives on after the dissolution of the main organization. We hold monthly meetings on the Google campus in Mountain View, focusing on user support, vendor demonstrations, and community contacts.
Did you know that we have a Yahoo Group Email List? You can join here:
The email list is where the announcements are sent and people can ask questions from the members at any time. You can set your email settings to get individual emails or a daily digest or only the announcements like this one. Or, if you prefer no emails, you can just go directly to the yahoo group to read the messages there.
