SVMUG Monthly Meeting Oct 19, 2015 Bryan Chaffin - Apple in Context

posted Oct 15, 2015, 4:16 PM by Pam Ailes

Hello svmug members & friends!

The next meeting of the Silicon Valley Macintosh User Group (svmug) is on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 7:00PM. As always, meetings are open to the public and free to attend. Bring a friend! We are in our “usual” room: BODEGA BAY TECH TALK ROOM at Google in Mountain View, CA. See below for details and directions.

TOPIC & SPEAKER:  Today’s Apple in Context - Bryan Chaffin

Bryan will be joining us in person to present “Today’s Apple in Context.” He will examine some of the biggest issues swirling around Apple and put them into context. Is Apple working on a car? Yes. Can Apple compete with Google Now? Not really. Is the Apple Watch a gotta-have device? Probably not. Is Apple getting too big for its corporate britches? Not by a long shot. These short answers are surrounded by a lot of baggage, and Bryan will offer his perspective based on 18 years of covering Apple.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Bryan Chaffin is the cofounder and editor-in-chief of The Mac Observer, which makes him a geek. (that’s what he said!) He’s been writing about Apple, Macs, iPods, iPhones, iPads, and other technology topics since 1997. He has contributed to MacAddict and MacFormat, and he has contributed to, tech edited, and co-authored books with and for the awesome Bob “Dr. Mac” LeVitus. More recently, he completed his first novel, Accidental Intelligence, and is busily shopping it out to agents.

OPEN SOURCE:  The Cloud presented by Robert Brown

What is the cloud? Robert will cover basic concepts of cloud services for us.

MEETING ROOM LOCATION:

We will be meeting at Google, in the Bodega Bay Tech Talk Room. If you have not been here before, please allow for some extra time to find the room. Often there is a giant white mobile "Hair cut van" parked in the parking lot near where a cafeteria for Google employees and the Bodega Bay room are located. If you are lost, call (408) 480-1690 and we will try to get you to the right place.

DIRECTIONS:

-- From Highway 101, take the Amphitheater Parkway exit, which is also Rengstorff Avenue; Head North.

-- Turn right (East) onto Charleston Rd.

-- Turn left (North) onto the Google complex, at the 3rd driveway entrance. Look at the map to verify the driveway's location since it is hard to see in the dark.

-- Look for the meeting room shown on the map.

NOTE:  If you are coming from the other direction on Charleston (coming from the East and driving West), once you cross the creek's bridge, turn RIGHT at the first driveway and go along the right side of the Google building.
