Hello svmug members & friends!

Due to the holiday last Monday, the next meeting of the Silicon Valley Macintosh User Group (svmug) is on Monday, February 24, 2014 at 7:00PM. As always, meetings are open to the public and free to attend. Bring a friend! WE ARE IN OUR "NORMAL" ROOM: BODEGA BAY TECH TALK ROOM. See below for details on how to get to the room.

SPEAKER & TOPIC:  Ted Landau, "Confessions of an Apple Writer"

Ted wrote:  After over 20 years of presenting at Macworld/iWorld, I’ve decided to call it quits. During that time, I've covered a lot of ground and witnessed an incredible amount of change. In this “preview” version of my final Macworld session, to be given next month, I'll try to share what little bits of wisdom I’ve managed to acquire — tracing my own career path along side of the evolution of tech media—from writing for magazines to writing books to doing a website. Along the way, I’ll relate personal behind-the-scenes anecdotes, including some I have never publicly revealed before. Finally, I’ll offer a few thoughts as to the future direction of the Apple universe

Ted Landau has been writing about Apple products since the 1980′s, starting as a contributing editor for MACazine and MacUser. He is currently a Senior Contributor for Macworld (Bugs & Fixes, op-eds, etc.). He is a regular guest on podcasts, most notably MacNotables with Chuck Joiner.

In 1996, Ted founded the MacFixIt website where he remained as editor for the next 6 years. Ted is the also the author of several troubleshooting books — from the #1 bestselling Sad Macs, Bombs and Other Disasters to Take Control of iPhone iOS.

LICEcap -- by Cockos software; presented by Daniel Reed

The LICEcap application can capture an area you select on your screen and save it directly to .LCF or animated GIF for later viewing in web browsers, etc.

We will be meeting at Google, in the Bodega Bay Tech Talk Room. If you have not been here before, please allow for some extra time to find the room. Often there is a giant white mobile "Hair cut van" parked in the parking lot near where a cafeteria for Google employees and the Bodega Bay room are located. If you are lost, please call 408-877-6377 and we will try to get you to the right place.

-- From Highway 101, take the Amphitheater Parkway exit, which is also Rengstorff Avenue; Head North.

-- Turn right (East) onto Charleston Rd.

-- Turn left (North) onto the Google complex, at the 3rd driveway entrance. Look at the map to verify the driveway's location since it is hard to see in the dark.

-- Look for the meeting room shown on the map.

NOTE:  If you are coming from the other direction on Charleston (coming from the East and driving West), once you cross the creek's bridge, turn RIGHT at the first driveway and go along the right side of the Google building. You'll most likely see the big white hair cut van parked there. You want to park near here. Look at the map to verify the driveway's location since it is hard to see in the dark.

During the Break, we nibble on yummies that attendees bring to the meeting. If you are able to do so, please bring some sort of finger-food.  There aren't any beverages available unless you bring some, so if you would like something to drink, please bring your own in a seal-able container, such as a water bottle.

SVMUG (Silicon Valley Macintosh User Group)

SVMUG meetings occur on the 3rd Monday of each month (with some holiday exceptions). Meetings are free and open to the public. Audience members may arrive or depart at their convenience, so feel free to arrive late, or leave early if you wish.

SVMUG started as the South Bay branch of the Berkeley Mac User Group (BMUG), and lives on after the dissolution of the main organization. We hold monthly meetings on the Google campus in Mountain View, focusing on user support, vendor demonstrations, and community contacts.

Did you know that we have a Yahoo Group Email List?  You can join here:

The email list is where the announcements are sent and members can ask questions at any time. You can set your email settings to get individual emails or a daily digest or only the special announcements like this one. Or, if you prefer no emails, you can just go directly to the yahoo group to read the messages there. You can always check the website for announcements.
